about

‘uh’ is one of the most common sounds heard in the English language. An imitative that holds no linguistic meaning, it’s nevertheless a sound recognised by everyone; it could be a hesitation or an exclamation of distrust. For sibling duo Dominic and Fionnuala Kennedy, it’s this ambiguity of the term that draws them to it.

uh grew up in Harlesden in North West London, where their parents had moved from the west coast of Ireland before they were born. However, they both spent a great deal of time back in their ancestral homeland growing up, taking in the Atlantic coastline and absorbing its parallels to their bustling metropolis upbringing – something that seeped into their debut EP ‘Seasick in Salts’.

Now however, they’re focusing on the skittish, urgent and beat-driven sounds that have found their way into their music due to their surroundings in London.

Take new single ‘attention’ for example, which begins with a spoken word intro imploring the listener to unlock their inner material potential, before erupting in a flurry of urgent electronic sequences and pulsating hi-hat rhythms – it only slows to catch its breath after four minutes of unbridled euphoria. The palette remains consistent throughout the track, the duo instead using voice and dynamics to push and probe its nuances.

About the track, they explain; “Going hard, going soft, going strange. attention is a sci-fi vignette, framing a spooked meditation, a somatic healing process tilting us towards feeding the ego, led by a sage with dubious credentials. It’s a prose-pop jaunt, sending your attention to unknown stations of the body.”

attention was recorded in a live take on analogue Roland gear and old reverb units at PRAH Studios, Margate and marks a new turn for the band - welding London’s hectic influence to the pastoral direction of their beginnings.
